I-CON News

Announcements, news, and updates for I-CON & ICON Science Fiction.

Blog 2.0 is Live, The News Feed is Next...

The new and improved I-CON Blog is up and running, thanks to a 72-hour non-stop coding session involving gallons of Mountain Dew, kilos of Cool Ranch Doritos (because those have been scientifically been proven to be the best chip), several cannibalized MacBooks, one lightning rod, an extremely "convenient" storm (thanks HAARP), and a few baby chickens*.

We're coming for you next, News Feed.

*No chickens were harmed in the making of this blog; they were our test audience.

And now for a brief intermission...

I-CON Labs will be taking down blog.iconsf.org and news.iconsf.org beginning later this evening and into the wee hours for some much needed upgrades. They're going to be shiny.

Thank You

We'd like to thank all of the members, volunteers, and guests who made I-CON 31 a memorable experience for everyone. Our volunteer staff aims to make sure that every I-CON is amazing, and we'd like to think they outdid themselves this year.

I-CON doesn't end when the convention does. We've had a quick post-con nap, and now we're ready to bring you the latest in scifi, science, fantasy, and everything else we're known for. (Like occasional secret or special developments from I-CON Labs, movie screenings, mini-events, etc.)

We look forward to seeing you all throughout the year and at I-CON 32!

Programming Preview: Media and Indie Films

Terry Pratchett once said that space is the penultimate frontier. If that’s true, the final frontier must be attending conventions, and this year’s Media guests do it boldly and gladly. Our lineup includes actors from three incredibly popular sci-fi franchises: Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Star Wars. We also have guests from Battlestar Galactica and from independent productions, all of whom love the genre and talking to our members about it. Keep in mind that, while there aren’t many dedicated discussion panels, each Media panel this year incorporates a questions portion.

This year, I-CON will have Megapanels, panels dedicated to specific franchises, with the guests taking questions. They will all be in the SAC Auditorium. The first one, on Saturday at 2:00pm, is on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, with Nana Visitor, who played Kira Nerys, Casey Biggs, Daphne Ashbrook, JG Hertzler, and Joshua Lou Freidman. Following that is “Breathless,” a Battlestar Galactica panel featuring Nicki Clyne, the specialist, and Rekha Sharma, the Cylon that pushed Nicki out an airlock. This panel is sure to leave you gasping. After that is a panel on the Doctor Who Big Finish Audio Dramas, featuring Jason Haigh-Ellory, the managing director of Big Finish, Paul McGann, whose Eighth Doctor had a second life in the audio dramas, and Frazer Hines. Sunday at 3:00pm is our Doctor Who megapanel, with Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Frazer Hines, and Colin Spaull, and will be moderated by the host of the Doctor Who: Podshock podcast, Ken Deep.

I-CON also hosts independent film makers. As such, we are proud to be the first convention to have the cast and crew of Pioneer One, an award-winning web series about life on Mars, but not in a way you’d expect. The first two episodes will be screened back-to-back on Friday, starting at 6:00pm. The third episode begins at 11:30am on Saturday, and the fourth is at 6:00pm. The fifth episode is on Sunday at 11:00am, and the season finale is at 2:00pm. Each episode will be followed by Q&A. Robert Leeshock will be screening his film GODMACHINE twice this weekend, once on Friday at 8:00pm, and again on Saturday at 5:00pm. Both screenings will have a Q&A afterwards. Members can even meet Robert and the crew of the film on Saturday at 3:00pm. He will also be taking questions on Earth: Final Conflict, which he worked on. Chris R. Notarile will also be screening several of his fan films, covering franchises like Nightmare on Elm Street, Batman, Captain America, and various other comic characters. Dark of Winter will be screened at  8:00pm on Saturday and 2:30pm on Sunday. Creator David C. Snyder and star Kyle Jason will have a separate meet-and-greet after the Saturday screening. Kelly Feustel and AJ Mattioli will be screening Bidentity Crisis, The Coffee Klash, and Coffee and a Bite at 7:00pm on Friday, 7:00pm on Saturday, and 8:00pm on Saturday, respectively. We will also be screening old films, such as Plan 9 from Outer Space and Capricorn One, over the course of the weekend, as well as a screening of a selection from 5-Second Films.

Programming Preview: SciTech

Everything I-CON does is as a means to educate, and nothing does that more directly than SciTech. Not content with exploring the outer limits (not those Outer Limits) of human understanding in laboratories and in the world around us, they had to invent entirely new programming, and this isn’t even all of it. You can find the rest on the Periodic Table of Scheduling.

First, they created a new compound from two known materials: Science and Film. Movie Science looks at sci-fi films and the validity of the science within. They’ll be discussing Aliens, Doom, Event Horizon, The Core, The Day After Tomorrow, and various asteroid films. Additionally, we’ll finally settle the classic debate: “Who Shot First?” Paul Blake and Liza Mezzacappa will discuss the personalities behind the under-the-table showdown.

A separate team working on this experiment came up with DorkSide, a series of panels that look at how technology impacts our lives in unusual ways. From the horrors of the Uncanny Valley to the psychological warfare of providing technical assistance, these panels will amuse and educate.

If you want something a bit more dangerous, DarkSide has been cooked up, to satisfy your evil curiosities. In these panels, members will get a chance to learn about computer warfare, cyber-crime, and how technology may change the way the world is run and how wars are waged.

On the light side of that is FutureNow, a series of panels that look into the future. They’ll discuss the hot topics of today, like nanotechnology, high-tech prosthetics, and the research at CERN. They’re also look at how to build the perfect survival bunker (in case the people who attend the DarkSide panels take over the world), if time travel is possible, and how technology is changing humanity as much as we develop technology further.

If you’re interested in how technology affects our daily lives, our LifeStyle panels are the perfect place. Learn more about how social media keeps us all connected, how to get everything you need from the internet, and how to build robotic minions out of paper with Island Labs. We’ll also take a look at BioWare’s morality systems in “BioWare’s Moral Highground,” and how those systems affect the game and the players.

As technology advances, law must advance with it. We’ll be running a series of Legal panels to look at why VCRs are legal but Napster wasn’t, Fair Use and the implications of it, and the state of our current laws.

While there are all these great compounds, none of them would have been created without the Science element itself. Join our panelists to discuss alternative energy, climate change, artificial life and intelligence, astronomy, medicine, and various other topics. You can also sit in on screenings of prerecorded material, including TED panels and Crash Course. For the young ones, Kitchen Science with Island Labs will look at basic science experiments you can perform with basic kitchen materials.

The Story of Doctor Who’s Jamie McCrimmon

Photo

I-CON 31 guest Frazer Hines is best-known for playing Second Doctor's companion Jamie McCrimmon, but not many people understand the weight behind that. Jamie was the Doctor’s companion for three years and one hundred and seventeen episodes. The only actors to appear more than him are William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, and Tom Baker-- the first four Doctors, in order. He’s also consistently voted as one of the top ten Doctor Who companions.

Sadly, many of the serials that Frazer starred in were lost, due to the BBC’s lax archiving efforts of the era. Some have been reconstructed, including Frazer’s premiere Doctor Who episode, “The Highlanders.” This episode will be screened on Saturday, March 31st from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and Sunday 2:00pm to 3:00pm in SAC 308. "The Tomb of the Cybermen," a classic story featuring Jamie, has recently been re-released on DVD. Frazer has also played Jamie in a number of Big Finish audio plays. He joins Paul McGann on the Big Finish Mega Panel Saturday at 4:00pm in the SAC auditorium.

Outside of Doctor Who, Frazer went to school with Jeremy Bulloch who, in addition to appearing in a Doctor Who story of the era, is best known for playing Boba Fett in Star Wars. Frazer also worked with comedy legend Charlie Chaplin. You can find out more about him in his autobiography, Hines Sight, which will be on sale at I-CON 31.

Programming Preview: Gaming

Gaming means something different to everyone, and I-CON has games all weekend for everyone. There's so much that Gaming has its own separate schedule, chock full of games.

Even if you don’t have your own miniature army, there are still opportunities to try out some War Games (not WarGames). There will be demonstrations for Battletech, Elfball, Flames of War, Heavy Gear, Malifaux, Uncharted Seas, and Warhammer Fantasy, in addition to tournaments, scenarios, and open gaming all weekend. For any of the tournaments, remember to get to the registration panels for the games you want to compete in. There will also be “Wargame Widows,” featuring the “women behind the men behind the wargaming scene at I-CON.” This panel is something that shouldn’t be missed.

If you deal in cards instead of miniatures, we have plenty of Collectible Card Game programming this year. For the first time at I-CON, a Doomtown tournament will be held. There will also be Magic: The Gathering drafts, and Shadowfist and Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments. Remember to get to the registration panels for the games you want to compete in.

If you prefer the role of the dice, I-CON’s selection of Role-Playing Games this year, presented by RetCon, will not disappoint. All of these RPGs are perfect for beginners, and if you want to try something short, there will be some One-Hour RPGs, including They Fight Crime!, High Noon, Space Colony, and Booty. Also for beginners will be Savage Worlds on Friday, Werewolf: The Forsaken on Saturday, and Champions on Sunday. All three of these are ideal for players new to RPGs or are unfamiliar with character creation. The longer games include such settings as Dragon Age, Exalted, Mage, Mutants and Masterminds, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Doctor Who, and Torchwood, among many others. Cam Banks will also be running the new Marvel Superheroes RPG, with a lucky audience member getting a chance to play with the pros. A full list of the RPGs and descriptions of the settings can be found in your collectible program guide.

We will also be running live-action role-plays (LARPs) for White Wolf’s Changeling and Vampire: The Masquerade (both of which are adults only), Escape from the Dungeon, Middlehaven’s The Hunt, a panel on the Camarilla (also adults only), and I-CON’s 3rd Annual Scavenger Hunt. There will also be I-CON’s Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker tournament, which requires no money but is adults only. The Celebrity Poker Tournament, our other card game, has dinner with our event coordinator at the Banquet as the first prize.

Gaming is also running some great panels this year, featuring our gaming guests. They’ll help you build an RPG character, talk about the different editions of Dungeons & Dragons, help you be a good GM, and teach you how to deal with difficult players. There’ll be World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Everquest meetups, a discussion of the gaming market’s evolution and where it will lead, and a meet-and-greet with the guests themselves. You’ll get a look at the industry through the eyes of female gamers, learn about gender roles in video games, and learn about indie game publishing. Guests will play Jeopardy!, talk about designing an original game, or about licensing and designing a game around your favorite TV show or movie. There will be panels that range from questioning the ethics and morals of the galactic forces in Mass Effect to preserving gaming artifacts for future generations to learn from, and much more.

Programming Preview: Anime

This year’s Anime programming has a competitive edge this year, and we mean that literally.

Anime's big competition this year is the Cosplay Contest, which is still accepting entries here.

If you love costumes, you'll also love this year's Fashion Show. The Fashion Show features Asian-inspired clothing, and audience members can ask questions of the models and fashion creators at the end of the show. If you have a costume you’d like to submit, you can do so here.

Those aren’t the only games, though. There’s the annual Fanmade Music Video competition, where you get to vote on the best one. There’s the Metapanel, where an audience member and a panelist have to entertain the room for 5 minutes, and whoever’s the most entertaining wins. There’s the Anime Game Show Super Show, which includes Match Game, Body Language, Card Sharks, and Press Your Luck. There’s Anime Squares, based on the classic Hollywood Squares (we couldn’t get Whoopi Goldberg for the center square, but we promise you won’t be disappointed), and Wheel of Anime is based on Wheel of Fortune.

How do you get into voice acting? Well, first you get up early on Saturday and go to “Voice Acting Then and Now,” which is followed by “Inside the Voice Actor’s Studio.” Then, after lunch, head to the Voice Acting Workshop to get some tips and tricks to breaking into the industry.

Finally, Anime will be screening two films this year: Ichi the Killer and Machine Girl. As a note, both of these screenings are adults only.

Be sure to check the schedule grid so you know when your favorite programs are!

Programming Preview: Fandom

This year, with help from Docking Bay 516, I-CON’s Fandom track has a ton of fun programming go all weekend. This is just a small sample of everything Fandom is bringing you this year!

Booktofilmicon

Discussions

There will be many discussions over the weekend, discussing specific shows and general fandom concepts. Examples include panels covering various topics within Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Hunger Games, Firefly, Game of Thrones, and the Vampire Diaries, along with:

  • Hollywood Remakes and Sequels: Discuss the apparent lack of creativity from Hollywood lately. There have been many reboots of popular franchises as well as a few surprise sequels. Which ones worked or didn't work? Why can't they leave well enough alone?
  • The Book Was Better, Or Was It?: Discuss how Hollywood has turned science fiction, fantasy, and young adult novels into popular movie and television franchises. Compare the books to recent screen renditions such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, as well as classics like Dune and War of the Worlds.
  • Movie Roundup: We'll be taking a look back at all the sci-fi, fantasy, and comic book movies that have been released since last I-CON. What did you love, what did you hate, and were there any surprises in theaters this past year?

Gamesicon_

Games

The biggest game this year is Fandom Feud, based on the classic Family Feud. You can even participate in the survey by going here. In addition to that is Wheel of Fandom, Name That Tune, and trivia panels for various fandoms.

Meetups

Fandom has organized fan meetups for the 501st, Rebel Legion, Doctor Who, Star Trek Online, Dumbledore’s Army, so you can meet with your friends and make new ones.

Be sure to check the schedule grid so you know when your favorite programs are!
